Are travel agencies going the way of the video store?
Closed

The world’s oldest tour operator, Thomas Cook, suddenly ceased operations over the weekend, which has left hundreds of thousands of travellers stranded and 21,000 jobs in jeopardy. The British government and the Civil Aviation Authority is now launching "Operation Matterhorn" in order to retrieve passengers and get them home.

Despite being in operation for 178 years, Thomas Cook has been unable to compete in today's travel industry. With online booking sites and budget airlines, consumers can often get better deals by planning and booking their travel themselves. The future for brick-and-mortar travel agencies isn't bright, with Reuters reporting that nearly 700 of these agencies in the UK shut down in 2017.

Do you still use a travel agent when booking a trip? Do you think travel agencies are becoming obsolete or do they still have a place the world?

The reason Thomas Cooks went out of business is they didn't move with the times, I use self supported online booking and a travel agent its always a good idea to hedge your bets and not rest on your laurels, without balance there are problems.

Travel agents will eventually go obsolete now, after the downfall of Thomas Cook. I personally have only used a travel agent once 19 years ago. It looks like technology will change how we do things. Whether thats a good thing or not, im not sure. Once the robots take all our jobs (which i hope it doesn't happen in my life time) its pretty much over for humanity.

I personally have never used a travel agency, and am not entirely sure why anyone would. I always book online. I do have relatives who use travel agencies for business travel however, so perhaps for this purpose if you are booking through a corporate account.
I always assumed you could find cheaper flights online.
