Are travel agencies going the way of the video store?
Closed

The world’s oldest tour operator, Thomas Cook, suddenly ceased operations over the weekend, which has left hundreds of thousands of travellers stranded and 21,000 jobs in jeopardy. The British government and the Civil Aviation Authority is now launching "Operation Matterhorn" in order to retrieve passengers and get them home.

Despite being in operation for 178 years, Thomas Cook has been unable to compete in today's travel industry. With online booking sites and budget airlines, consumers can often get better deals by planning and booking their travel themselves. The future for brick-and-mortar travel agencies isn't bright, with Reuters reporting that nearly 700 of these agencies in the UK shut down in 2017.

Do you still use a travel agent when booking a trip? Do you think travel agencies are becoming obsolete or do they still have a place the world?

With all different websites available, I never use a travel agency, but like to personally plan my trip and get the cheapest deal --- without the middle man.

I use a combination of both travel agents and online depending on the trip and what I am booking. Travel agents have access to airfares that can't always be accessed online. But haven't always been the best option. Accom much the same, they use certain suppliers and it doesn't always suit my needs. But I generally always email them my plans and see what they come back with. I think they are helpful for those that don't want to do the planning, researching or need advice etc.

No I use airline websites or online booking apps/ sites directly to cut out the middleman. Travel agencies are outdated/ unnecessary I believe, and also more expensive than the budget websites/ airlines usually. I would only use them if they were being used by my employed to book work related travel.

I hope not. They are still valuable but need to be trustworthy and have knowledge

Travel agencies use their expertise to get you the best value for money. They can save you money and can make recommendations based on your likes and interests.

I've never used one, because I prefer to be in control of all my travel plans! Having said that, I've never been on a lengthy tour of another country or more than one country at once - and in that circumstance, it might be nice to have everything organised for you! Now I just need to save up enough money to travel... haha.

I prefer to use a travel agency rather than book online,it's just more personal and everything is taken care for me so I don't have to do anything except pack my bags lol

Despite the amount of on-line bookings that we do ourselves it does depend upon just where we are going. if domestic then we would certainly book on-line, however if going international then it very much depends even more our destination. For instance we were both born in Britain but are now considered to be NZ residents and we do travel on NZ passports and we ensure that we do have British patriality stamps in our passports thus allowing us to travel to Britain without having to obtain visas. If to countries that require visas or some other form of certificate that allows us to enter those countries then it is recommended that you make your arrangements through a travel agent for they have a responsibility that their customers do have a problemless and so enjoyable holiday.holiday. So whilst many travel agents may develop the same problems as Cooks I believe that there will still be a necessity for travel agents.
