The Loch Ness monster - real or not?
Closed

A team of scientists from New Zealand's Otago University have released new findings that suggest the Loch Ness monster is probably just a giant eel. Professor Neil Gemmell, who led the study based on environmental DNA, outlined the theory that "these eels would normally migrate to reproduce, but they, for whatever reason, don’t. And they continue to grow to a very large size, forgoing reproduction for growth.”

Since 1933, "sightings" of a monster in Loch Ness have caught the imagination of people from around the world, and there have been numerous high-profile attempts to prove its existence. One of the more popular theories is that the Loch Ness monster is a plesiosaur that somehow survived the extinction of the dinosaurs. Unfortunately Gemmell has debunked this theory, saying that they found absolutely no evidence of reptilian DNA sequences in their research.

Nonetheless, the mystery and uncertainty as to what has been sighted in the loch continues to intrigue people. Do you think there's a Loch Ness monster, and what do you think it is?

The first image of 'Nessie', which started the whole thing, is a hoax and has been both admitted and confirmed. Whatever else people have seen in Loch Ness, it's a combination of wishful thinking and stuff you'd expect to exist in a lake. Good on the locals for turning it into a major tourist attraction though!

I holidayed in Scotland, in 1982, and went to Loch Ness. As old as l was, I sooo wanted to see 'Nessie'. LOL. I don't care what our kiwi scientist says, the Loch Ness Monster is real, in the hearts of those who have imagination and like a little magic in their lives.
