Is vaping safer than smoking?
Closed

This weekend in the U.S., the first death thought to be directly linked to vaping was reported. The patient was suffering from an unknown lung disease, which the Centres for Disease Control believe is part of an “ongoing outbreak” of pulmonary disease related to e-cigarette use.

Since late July, 193 cases of the lung disease have been reported across the U.S.. Symptoms include breathing and respiratory issues, as well as gastrointestinal upset. While the CDC has not identified a cause, in each case the patient had recently used an e-cigarette for nicotine or THC - the high-inducing element in marijuana.

E-cigarettes are sold as a device for those who want to quit smoking, but how effective are they?
According to the American Heart Association “The increasing popularity of vaping may 're-normalize' smoking, which has declined for years. Reversing the hard-won gains in the global effort to curb smoking would be catastrophic.”

Would you say vaping is re-normalising smoking?

In New Zealand, vaping has similar regulations to traditional cigarettes. Vaping products manufactured from tobacco can be sold to persons over the age of 18, but vaping is increasingly being banned from public environments. Do you think there should be more or less regulation around vaping?

I do think vaping is normalizing smoking, I think it's expensive, dangerous, and NOW we hear that Philip Morris is targeting poorer people here in NZ trying to make a fast buck. Shut down vaping shops.

I know that so many young people are vaping these days, thinking that it's harmless. But I think continuous vaping can have severe long-term health effects, and can be just as bad as smoking.

Would think there are some drawbacks just that we have no long term data or experience, like so many things 50 years time we'll know if it's good or bad.

Too many unknowns surrounding vaping. I do think it should be regulated. Personal choice but it is becoming popular, and a new trend, instead of smokers using it to try and quit.

It’s no less safe, this sort damage is similar to smoking which takes place over years of abuse. I see the same in work places with handling chemicals just cause you don’t die instantly people think hey it’s safe the reality it is doing damage Just too slowly for people to realise. Sooner or later probably you will knock 10-20 years off your life, it will leave you sick and unable to work or look after your self in retirement. The companies will be all gone by then and the poor old government has to pick up the pieces and spend our taxs to look after these sick people.

I don't think so, especially if there are no regulation on the vape product
